Missed Plays

This is a rough outline to remind myself of the storyline elements and updates that I have been slacking on, in hopes I can go back and write them up at some point…

June 16

Crossing from the mountains to the plains, the companions learned the dangers of the snow-covered wastes. In addition to the difficulty of pushing ahead through the snow, the mist making navigation difficult, it slowly came to light that something else was at work here. Marks of dangerous elementals burrowing through the earth reminded them that animals alone were not the only dangers. They avoided a frozen lake for fear of what might lie beneath, and perhaps brazenly examined a cavern, only to discover and flee from a denning dire leopard. Things grew strangest when they discovered a ghost village of sorts. Aided by a ghostly apparition of a master blacksmith, it seemed the village had been destroyed by a powerful druid. Amidst their investigation, a trio of tribespeople came upon them, and after some tenative negotiation agreed to travel together. Once out on the road, in the middle of the night, the ‘people’ revealed their true faces – Jackals who could change into men, expecting a quick meal. Thankfully, forethought had blessed the companions with silver weapons to drive off the attackers.

June 23

Left behind ruined barbarian village, encountered giant cliff leading up to plateau. Surrounded by gnolls – Not exactly friendly, but seem interested in taking them to their village, having foreseen their arrival. Priests and Chief seek the guidance of Naidora on how to deal with the increasingly harsh demands of Auril. After consideration, the explorers decide to go with old shaman’s advice, and journey to a hidden shrine and recover buried artifacts tied to the tribe’s old patron, a demon prince known as Yeenoghu. Attacked inside by the shrine’s guardians, then attacked outside by an Auril-loyal huntress, they managed to bring the relics back and avoid becoming new sacrifices, hopefully spiting Auril in the process.

July 2?

Traveled beyond Gnoll village. Richard, Jolan investigate strange bloodsnow cloud. Encountered horses afflicted with the Wylding; Killed one, kept two. Journeyed further to discover a frost worm carcass, and then gates of a large city. Explored the abandoned trade outpost and discovered another group of tribes-people apparently killed by The Haunt. Discovered airship dock, mostly non-wylding afflicted horse herd living out of stables in market square. Descended into central structure and discovered workshop, apparently sabotaged via ice-based magical objects and spells. Upon removing these wardings, released a powerful fire being calling itself The Efreet.

July 7

Richard reunited with party in trade city; discussions with Efreet, rested at the temple of Kord to recover from wounds infliicted by the Hyenas. Traveled north towards dwarven workshops, beset by frost Folk.

July 14th:

Dispatched Entombed, explored workshop, travelled north through blizzard. Thoqqua urged movement ove rcaution in blizzard, stumbled upon ancient ‘sun dwelling’.

Hurried Journeys
The frostfell contains many dangers, sites and creatures that could easily prove fatal to an unwary traveler. These dangers are typically dwarfed by the danger of enemies who will chase you across it.

A near week’s respite behind them, the Companion’s journey to the north continued, trekking from the downed vessel’s lonely frozen plateau along the canyons and valleys of the great mountain range. Hunting up some caribou and many pounds of ‘leftovers’ from their days of rest made for plenty to eat, but morning’s rays brought a rude awakening.

Goblins, seemingly well inured to the harsh cold of the waste, their temperment mericless and vicious to match, swept down and surrounded the fine glade they’d chosen to camp in. While handily dispatched, things gre for the worse when Calindy recognized the distant sound of a frost giant’s hunting horn – and, that giants sometimes cow goblin tribes into their personal service. Not wishin gto wait around and see this particular relationship in person, all involved agreed to pack up their campsite as quickly as possible, and make a break through the mountains, trying to stay well ahead of their persuer. With much of the journey ahead downhill, Calindy agreed to stay back and try to foil their persuers, catching up later.

At first, it seemed the ingenious halfling might make headway. A few ploys involving a fake camp, snowfigures of the party, and the loss of some clothes, showed promise! as light ran out, it seemed Calindy’s luck would as well, the giant wising to his schemes and making headway with his knowledge of the high mountain passes.

Pushed to their limit, exhaustion began to set in with nightfall and a new plan for the coming day passed between the adventurers in their camp, mulled over dried rations without a good window to hunt in.

As morning rolled over the mountainsides, the new scheme to try and lose their pursuer went into action. A narrow canyon off the main pass, while not narrow enough to stop a giant’s pursuit, seemed an ideal place to mix up their path . Still unsure of Calindy’s whereabouts, the troupe pressed on, encountering a fork in the path marked by a strange ruin. Richard magicked away the snow and they investigated, discovering some strange roadside traveling shine, complete with long-empty offering bowls and disintegrated cots… along with the restless remains of the last group to use the shrine, now half-frozen living dead hungry for flesh.

Naidora and Jolan, caught inside the small shrine, adapted best, taking quickly to slashing down the corpses, while outside Richard was caught up in the middle of the frozen dead. Even Harlan seemed to have bit off more than he could chew. Thankfully, Calindy finally caught up with the group, offering some assistance in putting the zombies to rest – But more in tending his fallen friend’s wounds. Despite his heroism, he was also the worst hit by the cold, when a zombie’s grasp sucked the warmth from him before it could be cut down. Struggling to get everyone on their feet and back on the road, the hunters set out, catching a quick meal and a sizable animal for Naidora to sacrifice for some restorative magic. The others also discovered several items in surprisingly good condition on the corpses…

Magic: Boots of the Unending Journey, Rapier of Unerring Direction, Rational Belt Pouch

Hurrying to make up for lost time, and walking through sunset, the beleaguered party eventually found a relatively safe place to camp and recover their breath for the next day. Worried that the Giant might be gaining they opted to hurry through the snowy mountains as quickly as possible.. Save one tiny detour. Jolan claimed he felt a strange ‘tug’, nothing he could quite express the urgency of to his allies, but something he knew himself to be significant. Following the hunch, a strange cavern gave way to strange, worked stone, then tiles, and finally, exploring cautiously, a strange perfectly cut chamber nestled within an icy mountain face.

Dominated by two smoky black mirrors and a pair of obelisks, they soon discovered that dousing the lights before revealing the chamber once more brought strange rolling figures in the mirrors forth as stoic, shadowy messengers, like elfin silhouettes. Only seeming interested in Jolan (And speaking a language only he fully understood,) they mentioned the Gale, a prince, and their Dow’shae, implying that they were perhaps left behind. They also revealed that the room was some sort of door, but it had been closed for reasons only known to this strange ‘gale’, who had gone north in search of… Well, what was never made clear.

Finally finding any more ‘discussion’ with the shadows useless, Jolan discovered a secret compartment, holding, most notably, another strange amulet, this one bearing an unusual good-aligned magical beast instead of a leaf. Leaving the strange ‘southern door’ behind, they caught up with their track, and struggled to put more distance between the giant and themselves.. And as night fell, find a place to camp.

With few options remaining, a rock plateau jutting from the frozen mountainside provided the best chance of safety; Any enemies approaching would have only one side to approach on. While the other settled in, Naidora and Harlan went looking for food, finding ideal, if perhaps unusual prey, in a young Tlalusk, auspiciously marked with dark fur in the vague shape of Auril’s holy symbol. While the pair were out, the rest of the group back at the camp were interrupted when a huge wolf, too smart for it’s own good, snuck up on the camp. Calindy made an effort to distract it with a ‘ball’, a maneuver which only angered it into charging the halfling. A single bite to his side, and Calindy fell over unconscious. Richard and Jolan leapt out to help, zapping it with a bolt of magic and trying to dazzle it, neither one discouraging the beast from disarming Pell and pinning Treyart.

Alerted by it’s initial howls, Harlan and Naidora started to hurry back, hoping to bring the Tlalusk with them. It seemed impossible, until Naidora summoned Tah’lain, a giant draconic feline, it’s mere presence scaring the Tlalusk into charging back to camp… And, with some guidance from Naidora, right into the side of the Worg, knocking it clean off the plateau. Jolan went to confirm it’s fate – Only to see tracks leading off where it had picked itself up from the tumble and limped away. After some consultation, Naidora and company decided that the symbol on the beast assured them it was a gift… The young Tlalusk became a hearty meal, along with many armloads of fur that Jolan would soon convert into a new set of furs for some under-clothed party members, as well as a new tent. For the night however, too wounded to continue, the party took a gamble, resting the night. The next morning started early, bidding to outrun the giant’s other allies.

During the day, the terrain nearing the edge of the mountain range offered little in the way of hunting – But the tug of Naidora’s bow brought the hunting pair upon a group of mountain sheep. Hoping to prove himself, harlan asked for the kill, just to be rebuffed, literally, and knocked down the mountainside as the sheep defended it’s perch.

The final obstacle before the descent from the mountains loomed before, just too far to cross before nightfall – A massive bridge of ice, spanning the chasm between two steep mountainsides, glittering in the gold light of sunset. Emboldened but recognizing the need to rest, the companions settled into camp for the night, buzzing with excitement for the final push, and possibly, escape from the frost giant hot on their trail.

The night passed with little to note – Except for Calindy? noticing a strange croak, and Naidora briefly catching a hint of metal on metal clinking in the wind. Fearing trouble come dawn, the companions found it, Goblins dug in on the bridge with ropes to keep them from sliding off. Despite their preperation (and some underhanded sacrifice, to try and convince the adventurers their ploy of cutting the ropes had worked,) the goblins stood little chance against them. Enemies dispatched, the bridge crossed, and the giant apparently outpaced for good, the party finally came down a long, difficult slope, emerging from the deep mountains, and pouring out onto the very fringes of an immense snowfield, unmarked white stretching out for dozens, if not hundreds of miles to the north…

Wonders of the Ancient Age
There are more wonders in this world, above and below the ice, than any one explorer might ever know. It is for the best, then, that there's more than one.

At least it warmed up. Stalled by a harsh cold snap the previous day, the companions set their camp in the safety of a stone overhang to protect them from a late rain and a cold night. Still, rain meant clouds, and the overcast weather helped warm the night up just slightly, although didn’t impede Naidora’s hunting, producing an evening meal.

Morning brought new troubles – Harlan seemed to have vanished, taking the sled with many of the party’s supplies with him. In their search for a solution, Jolan and Calindy knocked down some branches, took Calindy’s skis, and rigged a makeshift sled to carry the tent that Harlan had left behind when he disappeared. Beofre they could start on the road, fierce, bloodthirsty hawks Naidora spotted the night before attacked them, particularly eager for human flesh – Until swift blades and spears ended their hunt.

Striking out, the day was good for travel in the morning, the party making more time than they realized until a massive wall of rock blocked their path. Calindy made a daring, and almost fatal climb up the bare rock, allowing Jolan and Richard to combine their magical prowess to get the whole group up and over. On the other side, a long slope of fresh snows made for easy going, but Calindy and Naidora noticed that the warming temperatures made the mountains dangerous. Suspicions were confirmed before long, when Jolan spotted a landslide long before anyone heard it, offering enough warning to escape the deadly bury zone. Everyone but Calindy found themselves swept up and buried. The Halfling’s quick thinking helped free Naidora, before Jolan’s familiar located the sorcerer, leaving Richard unaccounted for. Almost too late, the trio dug fast and managed to locate Richard, unconscious beneath the slide. Rather than risk further trouble, assuming the mountain had done it’s worst, they decided to dig out a cave in the snow with Calindy’s handy shovel, and hunt up some berries and meat for dinner.

The following morning brought a surprise early on in travels. Atop a rocky escarpment, Calindy located a strange object seemingly held aloft by a stiff rope. The party ventured up through a series of exposed cliffs to find out what the object was, and discovered something far more unusual than they had imagined…

Elsewhere in the waste, a lone traveler stepping lightly over the deep snows (via snowshoes) discovered the abandoned den in the snow. Intrigued, he followed their unhidden tracks across the mountainside, then up the same path to the top of the cliffs.

Meanwhile, Harlan followed. His side trip had put him hours behind the group, but their difficulty with the rockslide and the snow had given him a chance to catch up.

Atop the escarpment, Calindy, Jolan, Naidora and Richard found the remains of a shipwreck, thousands of feet above sea level. Oddly, the vessel seemed to match a drawing in Calindy’s book, now filled as if with watercolors to show a ship sailing above the clouds alongside birds. Investigating through a gash in the side of the hold, they found evidence of long gone skeletons of miniscule sailors, along with simply unfathomable wealth, huge chests filled with silver. In their search, Jolan realized a stranger was watching them from the snow below, and Calindy shouted down. Who would be out here in the middle of nowhere, let alone follow them up? An elf, of course. Nimbly joining them atop the deck, The Answerer joined them and introduced himself as Ryan – Short for Uryaen.

With a hiss of sleds on snow, Harlan returned as well, offering little explanation for his absence, most simply welcome to have their missing belongings and a strong worker around to plunge into the wealth of the ship.

Supplies and Wealth: Untold volume of silver pieces. More than enough firewood. Uncarryable quantities of silk rope. Sewing kit, carpentry, leatherworking tools. Masterwork weaponsmithing tools. 125gp Alchemical Supplies. 20 100-page journals. Parchment and bookbinding supplies. Calligraphy kit. Seven Six 500gp bags of gems. 3lb jewel-studded scepter.

Magic: 500gp scroll materials. 500gp spellbook inscribing materials. Spellbook with most PHB Wizard spells up to 4th level. Gnome hooked hammer. Totem of Tah’lain, The Giant’s Cat. Scrolls: Burning Hands x2, Ray of Flame (CL 5), Resist Energy x2.

Chests carrying gems, art, and more subtle wealth filled the hold, while an alchemist’s workshop, a trove of books and a few key pieces of equipment turned up elsewhere. But below decks came the most shocking display of material – gold ingots stacked high in the lower hull, and a huge furnace-like machine that seemed connected to the troughs of lead spheres along both sides of the deck. Richard determined through study what Harlan discovered by trial and error – The machine turned ingots of gold into many times their mass in lead spheres! The companions realized that the entire boat, much like the plank they had seen chained to the ground, would float up if left to it’s own devices – And only the mass of lead held it firm to the ground. In addition, a strange, warm hammer-like weapon seemed to power the device.

Before the companions could seek more answers, the lower hold’s other inhabitants – Giant wasps, unfathomably with the faces of fiercely fanged baboons, wormed out of their nest behind the apparatus and attacked them. Jolan’s wall of smoke and Harlan held them at bay, long enough for Naidora to conjure an eagle to flank them. ‘Yaen displayed his talents, peppering them with arrows, while Richard propped up the party and blasted at the strange beasts with magic. Between them all Calindy’s rapier flashed, landing the final blows on all four wasps as Ryan patched the others up.

When the wasps lay dead, Richard found something uncovered in the scuffle – A ritual circle in the hull of the ship. Without pause, the excited arcanist set up to perform a ritual spell. Harlan discovered that the odd weapon, a hammer on one end, pick on the other, handily cleaved through the gold bars. Richard’s spell produced a surreal vision of the past that showed both the distant creation of the ship, it’s purpose as a treasure craft in the exodus, and it’s demise, along with the mountain, glimpses of a draconic protector tending it’s young’s eggs, and a fierce battle between the two ending with the flying vessel crashing into the flying lizard – followed by painful weeks of starvation as the surviving gnomes consumed their supplies before abandoning the site.

Finally loosed from his reverie, Richard shared the details. Wondering about the creature Harlan left the ship, digging at the ‘waterline’ to find signs of the beast below. He certainly found them. Reaching a layer of dirty ice, sensing a faint thumping beneath, the barbarian came face to face with the fierce, half-smashed visage of a twisted, icy wyvern. Much of it’s face gone, a single crystalline eye loosely twisting in a fragile socket as half a jaw of teeth snapped at the underside of the ice, Harlan reared back as long frosty gouges ruined the ‘window’ below, marred by criss crossing clawmarks.

Following moments of disbelief (mostly denial and bargaining,) Harlan called the others to abandon ship. Gathering valuables in their arms, they fled the hold just as the creature burst from beneath, breathing a cloud of ice and frost and freezing Harlan half to death. A giant wyvern, it’s wingclaws, side wing and head seemingly shattered like broken glass, clearly damaged but not disabled, leapt out upon them.

Following the initial shock, Jolan shouted out a warning that this beast was no dragon, but some sort of construct crafted from ice itself! Quick-thinking Calindy lobbed a vial of alchemist’ fire onto it, a perfect throw wasted as a faulty bottle bounced open, spilling only some of the burning liquid across the creature’s face. Richard let loose a powerful scroll discovered in the lab above, projecting a beam of searing flames up across the creature’s chest, leaving a jagged score that burst into flames, lighting the beast. More quick bow-work from the ranger, Ryan cracked the carapace, leaving just enough room for his arrow, too, to burst into flame. As more alchemist’ fire rained down and the fires upon it continued to burn, Jolan ran upstairs to seek more fire. Realizing others had already cleared out the lab, the large deck crossbows of the ship caught his eye instead. Leaping to man them, and suddenly insightful to their use, The sorcerer turned the great gun to slam a bolt into the creature’s back. Harlan stood and traded blows with the beast as Naidora ran outside it’s reach, pumping life into her allies. Roaring out, severely damaged, the Wyvern turned from the pricking of Harlan’s club (which chipped on it’s hide) to face softer targets. Richard sought to slow it, slackening the rocks beneath it and sending it crashing to the ground aflame, before it hauled itself back up to hurl another cloud of icy wind at Calindy, Richard and Naidora. The former two were brought to their knees by the frost, as Naidora sunk into unconsciousness, even as her wounds knit.

Another crossbow from the ship’s second crossbow grazed the monster, and more of Calindy’s jarred flames crashed across it, adding to the inferno. Siezing the chance to smash the monster on it’s unsteady feat, Harlan roared in fury, dropping his club, and plunging a perfectly forged scimitar into the dripping chasm in it’s chest left by Richard’s ray, shoving deep and prying the dragon apart, before wading in and smashing bone and ice until nothing moved…

As Harlan’s anger died down and the rest of the companions patched themselves together, Calindy located the chipped piece of sabretooth club so Jolan could reattach it. Exhausted, the group retreated below decks to the furnace’s warmth to camp and talk. Everyone realized that the massive wealth couldn’t all come with them, and despite some consideration, it seemed unlikely they could float the vessel without damaging it further, and risking pieces of the hull floating off on the winds. They decided it best to give Jolan time to learn the new tools discovered aboard the ship and improve the party’s packs and sleds, Richard time to investigate the magical equipment left behind, and Calindy a chance to browse the ship’s surviving library (behind waterproof cabinets.) Ryan fitted the arrowheads discovered in the dead elf’s tent nights before as well as a few silver-tipped arrows with Jolan’s help, as well as helping Harlan and Naidora hunt each day’s food.

Five days of careful work and preparation later, the companions went over their gear, packing carefully, distributing what they could bring with them. A fair share of wealth made it into their packs and sleds, all with the understanding that the tools of survival came first, but the lessons learned as their sled ‘disappeared’ also on their minds. Packed, rested, fed and determined, they set out from their brief respite, all with concern for even more dangers and wonders ahead nagging them in the back of their minds.

Now -

The ambush tactics wouldn’t save them. Even familiarity with the snow turned against them as the heat of battle with dangerous foes broke their focus and let the terrain become the enemy. Trees served only as distractions as they sought cover, no ridge could keep them from their enemies arrows, and even the time-honored tactic of standing on a fallen log, to strike their enemies from above, didn’t serve them well this day. The goblins stood little chance, as their attempted strike earned them only defeat.

Their failure would make their leader, the frost giant who organized their band and raised them to more than a simple tribe of hunters, furious…

Days Before -

Five souls departed from the safety and drudgery of the vale.

The Explorer sought to find wonders seen only in pictures, and test himself against the snow.

The Guardian sought to bring back good times that had marked his youth, a spring for his tribe.

The Crafter sought to find his own truth, and unearth magics of both nature and the forge.

The Shaman sought to find her faith, and hope for a way to save her people from her own devotion.

The Scholar sought to find danger from his visions, using ice and what it’s buried to find truth.

Fate, necessity, or maybe simple math of the only northern road eventually brought them into one place, mistakes and shortcomings offset by the strengths of their newfound companions, comraderie found among the lonely snows – despite a subtle distrust of their aligned goals.

Jolan found the small camp Harlan had set up, seemingly by accident. Calindy’s explorations brought him to a nearby overlook, and Naidora, tracking a wolfpack, soon joined them. Harlan and Naidora set out to secure some extra food, judging Harlan’s rabbit too little for four hungry travelers, and brushed into the eerily prescient Richard. The hunters turned up a small deer (and signs of wild animal trouble), and Naidora’s strange, bloody magics surprised most. Calindy’s unusual book intrigued the two arcanists, who realized quickly their different approaches to a similar art/science. Jolan used his fine pottery to cook less fine venison soup, and despite it’s shortcomings the meal helped warm the companions as they crammed into Harlan’s tent for the evening.

Such a fine night couldn’t go completely well. Midnight brought the unexpected approach of wild dogs, fur bleached white, eyes red and fangs dripping, surrounding the tent and baying into the night. As the adventurers emerged, Jolan and Richard didn’t fare well against the mad animals, wounded. Harlan, Calindy and Naidora rushed to assist. Calindy’s rapier kept the dogs at bay long enough to tend to both caster’s wounds, Harlan stood his ground against the bulk of the animals, and with the faint scent of Brimstone, Naidora brought forth a cackling fiend of a hyena to return the bites of the canines tenfold. Otherwise freed from the hounds, Naidora helped Jolan to his feet, displaying his unusual talents for oversized archery. Harlan’s clever fighting turned the dogs own jaws against them, fending them off and finally running the last down to slay.

Harlan discovered the animals were once tame, presuming them a sled team. Naidora confirmed that the animals were afflicted by the Wylding, a strange disease of madness touching domestic animals left too long in the frost. The nearby sled yielded some valuables – But, mostly firewood.

Supplies: 20 lbs firewood, 10 lbs metal scrap, 100’ silk rope, cole weather outfit, two nets, seven days trail rations.

The next morning, despite feeling depleted from the midnight interruption, the tentmates set out to work their way through the Highpass. Aptly named, the deep chill from the clear night before didn’t ease up come morning, and the climb up into the pass brought both thin air, and bone-chilling temperatures. The descent proved less arduous, although things were close, narrowly avoiding a patch of quickslush that could have easily frozen anyone foolish enough to fall in.

Sharp eyes on the way down found the remains of an elven camper, years – possibly even decades since deceased. While the elf’s tent held up well, even a backpack and the hafts of their arrows had not survived the harsh environment. A strange broken pendant found in the tent seemed to match Jolan’s own, with Richard discerning an odd aura about it. Jolan also found a way to discern the nature of the Elf’s rusted weapons, a courtblade and close combat knife of elven craft, both rusted through, but simple enough to repair later on.

Supplies: 20 elven rations, elven courtblade, elven close combat blade, honeyleather medium pup tent, elvencraft woodworker’s kit

Their luck unable to hold out forever, the cold finally pierced their warm outfits and wards in the early afternoon. Some careful work by Harlan and Naidora kept Jolan from freezing on the spot, but after another hour the crew decided to retire early, finding an out of the way place to set up camp. While the distance traveled might not be great, some harsh lessons about the dangers of frigid cold were better learned early in the journey, instead of striking later on. Clearly, soem careful planning and adaptation is necessary for the journey north to continue…

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
